Cachar bulbul or Iole cacharensis seen at Dosdewa in Karimganj, Assam, India

Cachar Bulbul (Ixos cacharensis) is a forest-dwelling bulbul endemic to the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent. This species is primarily associated with dense subtropical and tropical evergreen forests, where it forages quietly in the mid and upper canopy. Once considered a regional variant, the Cachar Bulbul is now recognised as a distinct species based on vocal and morphological differences.

Habitat and Range
The Cachar Bulbul is found in hill forests of Northeast India, extending into adjoining regions of Southeast Asia. It favours subtropical and tropical evergreen forests, forest edges, and well-wooded slopes, typically at low to mid elevations. The species is most often observed moving in pairs or small groups within dense foliage.

Conservation Status
The Cachar Bulbul is currently listed as Least Concern, though its dependence on forested habitats means it may be locally affected by deforestation and habitat degradation. Continued forest protection in its range is important for maintaining stable populations.
