Wheaters - Family Overview

Wheatears are small to medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Muscicapidae, a group that also includes chats and flycatchers.

They are typically associated with open landscapes such as grasslands, rocky terrain, semi-deserts, alpine meadows, and cultivated areas. Wheatears are ground-oriented birds, often seen hopping or running across open ground while foraging.

Most wheatears are insectivorous, feeding on insects and other small invertebrates captured on the ground or by short aerial sallies. Many species show striking plumage contrasts, often featuring pale bodies, dark wings, and a characteristic white rump or tail pattern.

Wheatears have a wide distribution across Europe, Asia, and Africa, with several species undertaking long-distance seasonal movements between breeding and non-breeding areas.

In India, wheatears are primarily winter visitors, occurring in open habitats across plains, scrublands, rocky plateaus, and high-altitude regions.
