Treeswifts - Family Overview

Treeswifts are medium-sized aerial birds belonging to the family Hemiprocnidae. They are superficially similar to swifts but differ in structure, perching behaviour, and proportions, with longer wings and a more swallow-like appearance.

Members of this family inhabit forest edges, clearings, and tall woodland, where they forage for flying insects in open airspace. Unlike true swifts, treeswifts regularly perch on exposed branches and wires between feeding bouts.

In the Indian subcontinent, treeswifts are restricted mainly to the northeastern regions. They are typically observed singly or in pairs, often perched prominently before making short, agile flights to capture insects.
