Treepies – Family Overview

Treepies are medium to large-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Corvidae, which also includes crows, ravens, magpies, and jays. They are characterised by their long tails, strong bills, and agile movements through trees.

Treepies are typically found in forests, woodland edges, plantations, and well-wooded countryside, where they move actively through the canopy and mid-storey. They are alert and vocal birds, often detected by their calls before being seen.

These birds are omnivorous, feeding on insects, fruits, seeds, small vertebrates, and occasionally eggs and nestlings. Foraging takes place both in trees and on the ground, reflecting their adaptability and intelligence.

Treepies are generally seen singly, in pairs, or in small family groups. Like other corvids, they display complex behaviour, strong territoriality, and a high level of awareness of their surroundings.

The family is distributed across Asia, with several species occurring in the Indian subcontinent. In India, treepies are widespread in forested and semi-wooded habitats, from lowlands to foothills, and are familiar components of woodland bird communities.
