Tits - Family Overview

Tits are small, active passerine birds belonging to the family Paridae. They are widely distributed across forests, woodlands, gardens, and montane habitats, and are known for their agility, intelligence, and energetic foraging behaviour. These birds are primarily insectivorous, feeding on caterpillars, beetles, spiders, and other small invertebrates, particularly during the breeding season. Many species also consume seeds, fruits, and nuts, making them adaptable to seasonal changes in food availability. Their ability to exploit a variety of food sources allows tits to thrive in both natural and human-modified environments. Tits are often seen moving in small groups or as part of mixed-species feeding flocks, especially outside the breeding season. They are vocal birds, using a range of calls and songs to communicate, defend territory, and maintain contact within flocks. In India and surrounding regions, tits are commonly associated with hill forests and higher elevations, though some species occur in foothills and well-wooded lowland areas. Their contrasting plumage patterns and lively behaviour make them popular subjects for birdwatchers and photographers.
