Swallows – Group Overview
Swallows are slender, fast-flying passerine birds specialised for catching insects on the wing. They are commonly seen over open landscapes such as wetlands, grasslands, farmland, rivers, and around human settlements.
Swallows belong to the family Hirundinidae, which includes both swallows and martins. They are characterised by streamlined bodies, long pointed wings, and agile flight, allowing them to feed almost continuously while airborne.
Many swallow species are highly migratory, travelling long distances between breeding and wintering grounds. They often nest colonially, using mud or burrows on banks, cliffs, buildings, and bridges.
This section features photographs of swallows documented across diverse habitats, highlighting variation in tail shape, flight behaviour, and nesting strategies among species.
