Storks - Family Overview

Storks belong to the family Ciconiidae, a group of large, long-legged wading birds typically associated with wetlands, rivers, floodplains, grasslands, and agricultural landscapes.

They are powerful and patient hunters, feeding mainly on fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and small mammals. Unlike herons, most storks hunt by sight while walking steadily through shallow water or open terrain.

Storks are known for their broad wings, long bills, and soaring flight, often using thermals to travel long distances with minimal effort. Many species produce little or no vocal sound, relying instead on bill-clattering displays, especially during breeding.

The family is distributed across much of the world, with species found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Several storks are migratory, while others remain resident depending on food availability and climate.

In India, storks are prominent inhabitants of wetlands, reservoirs, river systems, and agricultural fields, with species ranging from widespread residents to winter visitors and regionally threatened birds.
