Sibias – Family Overview
Sibias are medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Leiothrichidae. They are characterised by their slender bodies, long tails, and often striking wing and tail patterns.
Sibias are primarily birds of montane forests, where they inhabit the canopy and mid-storey of broadleaf and mixed forests. They are frequently seen moving through trees in active, vocal groups.
These birds feed mainly on insects, supplemented with fruits and berries depending on season and availability. Foraging usually takes place among foliage, with birds gleaning prey from leaves and branches.
Sibias are social and gregarious, often forming small flocks and participating in mixed-species feeding parties. Their calls are a familiar sound in forested hill regions.
The family is distributed across the Himalayas and Southeast Asia. In India, sibias occur mainly in the Himalayan foothills and montane forests, where they are characteristic birds of higher-elevation woodland.
