Shamas - Family Overview
Shamas are medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Muscicapidae. They are characterised by long tails, upright posture, and contrasting plumage, often with rich rufous or chestnut tones on the underparts.
Members of this group inhabit forest undergrowth, dense scrub, and shaded woodland, where they forage close to the ground for insects and other small invertebrates. They are typically solitary or seen in pairs and are known for their alert behaviour and strong territoriality.
In the Indian subcontinent, shamas are associated mainly with evergreen and moist deciduous forests. Several species are noted for their varied and melodious vocalisations, particularly during the breeding season.
