Sandpipers - Family Overview
Sandpipers belong to the family Scolopacidae, a diverse group of wading birds commonly found along shorelines, mudflats, wetlands, rivers, and coastal habitats.
This group includes a wide range of species varying in size and bill shape, adapted for feeding by probing mud, sand, or shallow water for insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and other invertebrates.
Sandpipers are often subtle in plumage, dominated by browns, greys, and whites, which provide effective camouflage in open wetland environments. Many species show noticeable seasonal and age-related variation.
Members of this group have a near-global distribution and include some of the most wide-ranging waders, with many species undertaking long-distance seasonal movements between breeding and non-breeding areas.
In India, sandpipers are most frequently recorded in wetlands, estuaries, tidal flats, reservoirs, and riverbanks, particularly during the winter months.
