Sandgrouse - Family Overview
Sandgrouses are ground-dwelling birds belonging to the family Pteroclidae. They are adapted to arid and semi-arid environments and are characterised by compact bodies, long pointed wings, and strong, fast flight.
Members of this family inhabit deserts, dry grasslands, scrub, and open plains. They feed mainly on seeds and grains, often travelling long distances to reach feeding and watering sites.
In the Indian subcontinent, sandgrouses are associated primarily with dry and open landscapes. They are well known for their regular movements to water sources, especially during dry periods, and for their cryptic plumage that blends with arid surroundings.
