Rosefinches - Group Overview
Rosefinches are small to medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Fringillidae. They are characterised by stout, conical bills adapted for seed-eating and, in many species, rich pink or rose-coloured plumage in adult males.
Members of this group are typically found in montane forests, forest edges, scrub, and alpine habitats. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, buds, and berries, with insects taken seasonally, particularly during the breeding period.
In the Indian subcontinent, rosefinches are primarily associated with higher elevations in the Himalayas and adjoining regions. Several species are seasonal visitors, moving to lower altitudes during winter.
