Redstarts – Group Overview

Redstarts are small to medium-sized passerine birds known for their contrasting plumage and characteristic tail-flicking behaviour, often revealing bright rufous or orange tail feathers. They are commonly found in rocky areas, forest edges, open woodland, and montane habitats.

Redstarts belong to the family Muscicapidae, which includes flycatchers, wheatears, and chats. Most species forage actively from low perches, making short sallies to the ground or into the air to capture insects.

Many redstarts are migratory, moving between breeding and wintering grounds across continents. Their alert posture and frequent tail movements make them relatively easy to identify even when plumage details are subtle.

This section features photographs of redstarts documented across diverse habitats, highlighting variation in plumage, behaviour, and seasonal appearance among species.
