Pratincoles – Family Overview
Pratincoles are medium-sized wading birds belonging to the family Glareolidae, which also includes coursers. They are distinctive birds combining features of waders and aerial insectivores.
Pratincoles are typically found in open habitats such as riverbanks, wetlands, grasslands, salt pans, and dry plains, often near water. Despite their wader-like appearance on the ground, they are agile and buoyant fliers.
These birds feed mainly on flying insects, which they catch on the wing using swift, swallow-like flight. Foraging often takes place during dawn and dusk, when insect activity is highest.
Pratincoles have long pointed wings, short legs, and large eyes, adaptations that aid their aerial feeding behaviour. When resting, they often sit on open ground, where their cryptic plumage provides effective camouflage.
The family has a wide distribution across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In India, pratincoles occur as both resident and migratory species, frequently associated with open wetlands and riverine landscapes.
