Parrotbills – Family Overview

Parrotbills are small to medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Paradoxornithidae. They are named for their short, thick, parrot-like bills adapted for feeding on seeds and plant material.

Parrotbills are primarily associated with reedbeds, tall grasslands, bamboo thickets, and marshy vegetation, where they move actively through dense cover. They are often secretive and more easily detected by their calls than by sight.

These birds feed mainly on seeds, grass stems, buds, and insects, with diet varying according to season and habitat. Foraging usually takes place low in vegetation, often in small groups.

Parrotbills are generally social birds, frequently seen in pairs or flocks. Their behaviour includes constant movement through reeds and grasses, and many species show strong site fidelity within suitable habitat.

The family is distributed across Asia, with several species occurring in the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the Himalayan region and parts of Northeast India. They are closely associated with wetland and grassland ecosystems.
