Nuthatches - Group Overview

Nuthatches are small passerine birds belonging to the family Sittidae. They are characterised by compact bodies, strong bills, short tails, and their distinctive ability to move head-first down tree trunks and branches.

Members of this family are closely associated with wooded habitats, including forests, woodland, and mature tree cover. They feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, as well as seeds and nuts, which are often wedged into bark crevices and hammered open.

In the Indian subcontinent, nuthatches occur primarily in forested regions, especially in hill and montane areas. They are usually observed singly or in pairs and are often detected by their calls while foraging methodically along tree trunks.
