Nutcrackers - Group Overview

Nutcrackers are medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the crow family Corvidae. They are characterised by sturdy bodies, strong straight bills, and a close association with coniferous and montane forests.

Members of this group are best known for their reliance on seeds, particularly pine seeds, which form a major part of their diet. Nutcrackers regularly cache food in the ground or among vegetation, playing an important role in seed dispersal within forest ecosystems.

In the Indian subcontinent, nutcrackers are confined mainly to higher elevations in the Himalayas, where they inhabit coniferous forests and adjoining wooded slopes. They are typically observed singly or in pairs and are often detected by their calls rather than prolonged views.
