Moorhens - Family Overview

Moorhens are medium-sized wetland birds that belong to the rail family, Rallidae. They are characterised by laterally compressed bodies, strong legs, and a preference for dense waterside vegetation.

Members of this group inhabit freshwater wetlands, ponds, lakes, canals, and marshy areas, often frequenting vegetated edges. They feed on a varied diet that includes aquatic plants, seeds, insects, and small invertebrates, obtained while walking or swimming.

In the Indian subcontinent, moorhens are widespread residents and winter visitors. They are usually seen singly or in pairs, occasionally forming loose groups, and are often observed swimming in open water or moving cautiously along reed margins.
