Magpies – Family Overview

Magpies are medium to large-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Corvidae, which also includes crows, ravens, jays, and treepies. They are known for their bold behaviour, strong bills, and contrasting plumage patterns.

Magpies occupy a wide range of habitats including forests, woodland edges, open countryside, farmland, gardens, and urban areas. They are highly adaptable birds and are often comfortable living close to human settlements.

These birds are omnivorous, feeding on insects, small mammals, reptiles, fruits, seeds, and occasionally carrion. Foraging takes place both on the ground and in trees, reflecting their versatility and intelligence.

Magpies are generally social birds, seen singly, in pairs, or small groups. They are known for complex vocalisations, territorial behaviour, and strong pair bonds that may last for several breeding seasons.

The family has a wide distribution across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and parts of North America. In India, magpies are represented mainly by forest and woodland species, particularly in the Himalayan region and Northeast India.
