Larks - Family Overview

Larks are small to medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Alaudidae. They are closely associated with open landscapes and are characteristic birds of grasslands and arid regions.

Larks are primarily ground-dwelling birds with cryptic brown or sandy plumage that provides effective camouflage. Many species have long hind claws adapted for walking and running on open ground.

Several lark species are well known for their elaborate song flights, during which males ascend high into the sky while delivering sustained and melodious vocal displays.

Larks feed mainly on seeds and insects, with seasonal variation in diet depending on habitat and availability. Foraging typically takes place on the ground in open areas with sparse vegetation.

The family has a wide distribution across Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australia. India supports a diverse assemblage of resident and migratory lark species adapted to dry plains, scrublands, and agricultural landscapes.
