Ibises - Family Overview
Ibises belong to the family Threskiornithidae, a group of medium to large wading birds commonly found in wetlands, rivers, floodplains, estuaries, and coastal lagoons.
They are easily recognised by their long legs and distinctive downcurved bills, which are well adapted for probing soft mud and shallow water in search of insects, crustaceans, molluscs, small fish, and other aquatic prey.
Plumage in ibises ranges from white and grey to deep chestnut or glossy black, with some species showing iridescent sheen in good light. Many species are gregarious, feeding and roosting in flocks, especially outside the breeding season.
Ibises have a wide global distribution, occurring across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Some species are resident, while others undertake seasonal movements in response to rainfall and food availability.
In India, ibises are widespread across wetlands, agricultural landscapes, and coastal regions, with several species forming an important component of the country’s wetland bird diversity.
