Hawks - Group Overview

Hawks are agile birds of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae, known for their sharp talons, hooked beaks, and exceptional hunting skills. The group commonly referred to as Accipiters includes medium to small hawks adapted for rapid flight through forests and wooded landscapes.

Accipiter hawks are characterised by short, broad wings and long tails, allowing precise manoeuvring while pursuing prey such as small birds, reptiles, and mammals. They are often seen perched quietly within foliage or making sudden, swift dashes through dense vegetation.

In India and across Asia, hawks like the Shikra are familiar residents of forests, agricultural landscapes, and even urban green spaces. Their adaptability and keen eyesight make them one of the most successful and widely distributed raptors in the region.

Photographs in this section feature hawks observed across diverse habitats, showcasing natural behaviour such as perching, hunting, and flight. Each image is documented with accurate species identification and location details wherever available.
