Harriers - Group Overview
Harriers are medium-sized birds of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae. They are characterised by long wings, long tails, and an owl-like facial disc that aids in locating prey while flying low over open ground.
Members of this group are closely associated with open habitats such as grasslands, marshes, agricultural fields, and scrub. They hunt primarily by quartering slowly over terrain, feeding on small mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects.
In the Indian subcontinent, harriers are mainly winter visitors, occurring across plains and wetlands during the non-breeding season. They are often observed flying low at dawn and dusk or roosting communally in suitable open areas.
