Gulls - Family Overview

Gulls belong primarily to the family Laridae, a group of medium to large seabirds commonly associated with coastlines, estuaries, lakes, rivers, and wetlands.

Highly adaptable and intelligent, gulls are opportunistic feeders with a varied diet that includes fish, invertebrates, carrion, refuse, and occasionally small birds or mammals. Their strong bills and versatile foraging behaviour allow them to thrive in both natural and human-altered environments.

Plumage in gulls often changes with age, with many species taking several years to reach full adult appearance. Seasonal and age-related variation can make identification challenging, especially among closely related species.

Gulls are found worldwide, from polar regions to the tropics. Some species are strongly migratory, travelling long distances between breeding and wintering grounds, while others remain resident throughout the year.

In India, gulls are most frequently observed along coastlines, large rivers, reservoirs, and inland wetlands during winter months, when migratory species arrive in significant numbers.
