Grosbeaks - Family Overview
Grosbeaks are medium-sized passerine birds characterised by their large, thick, and powerful conical bills. They belong primarily to the finch family Fringillidae and are adapted for cracking hard seeds and kernels.
Members of this group inhabit forest, woodland, scrub, and montane regions, often frequenting tree canopies and forest edges. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, buds, fruits, and berries, with insects taken seasonally, particularly during the breeding period.
In the Indian subcontinent, grosbeaks are associated mainly with hill and montane forests, especially in the Himalayas and adjoining ranges. They are usually observed singly, in pairs, or in small groups and are often unobtrusive despite their robust appearance.
