Geese – Family Overview

Geese are large waterfowl belonging to the family Anatidae, a group that also includes ducks and swans. They are characterised by their robust bodies, long necks, strong bills, and largely terrestrial behaviour compared to most ducks.

Most geese are associated with open wetlands, lakes, rivers, floodplains, grasslands, and agricultural fields. They are primarily grazing birds, feeding on grasses, aquatic vegetation, seeds, and agricultural crops, often foraging in flocks.

Many goose species are highly migratory, undertaking long-distance movements between their breeding grounds in temperate or Arctic regions and wintering areas further south. In India, geese are mostly encountered as winter visitors in wetlands, reservoirs, and riverine landscapes.

Geese are social birds and are frequently seen in family groups or larger flocks, especially during the non-breeding season. Their loud calls and strong flight formations make them conspicuous during migration and wintering periods.

Several goose species are sensitive to habitat degradation and disturbance, making them important indicators of wetland health. Conservation of wetlands and surrounding grasslands plays a crucial role in supporting migratory goose populations.
