Falcons – Family Overview

Falcons are medium-sized birds of prey belonging to the family Falconidae. They are known for their pointed wings, streamlined bodies, and exceptional speed, with some species ranking among the fastest animals on Earth.

Falcons typically inhabit open landscapes such as grasslands, deserts, agricultural areas, coastal regions, and mountainous terrain. Many species are highly adaptable and are also found in urban environments, where tall buildings can mimic natural cliff faces.

These raptors hunt primarily by sight and are specialised for aerial pursuit. Their diet consists mainly of birds, along with small mammals, reptiles, and insects, depending on the species and habitat.

Falcons possess a distinctive hooked beak with a specialised tomial tooth, which allows them to efficiently dispatch prey. They do not build nests in the traditional sense, often laying eggs on bare ledges, scrapes, or in abandoned nests of other birds.

India supports several falcon species, including both resident and migratory birds. Many migratory falcons pass through or winter in the subcontinent, particularly in open plains and coastal regions.
