Drongos – Group Overview
Drongos are medium-sized passerine birds known for their glossy black or dark plumage, deeply forked tails, and agile flight. They are commonly found in open woodland, forest edges, farmland, and scrub, often perching conspicuously while scanning for insects.
Drongos belong to the family Dicruridae. They are highly adept aerial insect hunters and frequently sally out from exposed perches to catch flying prey. Many species are also known for their bold behaviour, often mobbing much larger birds.
Several drongos are excellent vocal mimics, incorporating the calls of other birds into their repertoire. This intelligence and adaptability have allowed them to thrive across a wide range of habitats, including human-modified landscapes.
This section features photographs of drongos documented across diverse habitats, highlighting variation in tail shape, plumage sheen, and foraging behaviour among species.
