Divings Ducks - Family Overview

Diving ducks belong mainly to the tribe Aythyini within the family Anatidae, a group of waterfowl adapted for underwater feeding in lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and deep wetlands.

Unlike dabbling ducks, diving ducks obtain food by fully submerging, using powerful legs positioned far back on the body to propel themselves underwater. Their diet includes aquatic plants, molluscs, crustaceans, and small fish.

These ducks typically require a running start across the water to take off and are less agile on land compared to dabbling ducks. Many species show subtle plumage patterns, with males often displaying richer colours during the breeding season.

Diving ducks occur across much of the Northern Hemisphere and include both resident and migratory species. Several undertake long-distance migrations between breeding areas in temperate or subarctic regions and wintering grounds farther south.

In India, diving ducks are most commonly observed during winter, when migratory species arrive at large lakes, reservoirs, and wetland complexes across the country.
