Coursers - Family Overview

Coursers are ground-dwelling birds belonging to the family Glareolidae. They are adapted to open, dry landscapes and are characterised by long legs, upright posture, and swift running behaviour.

Members of this group inhabit arid plains, semi-deserts, dry grasslands, scrub, and open agricultural areas. They feed mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, which are captured while running on the ground rather than probing or wading.

In the Indian subcontinent, coursers are associated primarily with open and sparsely vegetated habitats. They are typically observed singly or in pairs and rely on camouflage and alert posture to avoid detection.
