Choughs - Family Overview
Choughs are medium-sized members of the crow family, Corvidae. They are characterised by glossy dark plumage, long wings, and a slender, often curved bill, with strong and agile flight.
Members of this group are closely associated with mountainous and upland regions. They inhabit rocky slopes, alpine meadows, cliffs, and high-altitude grasslands, where they forage mainly on insects and other small invertebrates, along with seeds and plant matter.
Across their range, including alpine regions of Europe and Asia, choughs are typically observed in pairs or small groups. They are often conspicuous in flight over open terrain and are well adapted to harsh, high-altitude environments.
