Buzzards - Family Overview

Buzzards are medium to large birds of prey belonging to the family Accipitridae. They are characterised by broad wings, relatively short tails, and a soaring flight style, often seen circling on thermals.

Members of this group inhabit a wide range of habitats including open countryside, grasslands, forest edges, hills, and mountainous regions. They feed mainly on small mammals, reptiles, birds, and carrion, using perches or aerial scanning to locate prey.

In the Indian subcontinent, buzzards occur primarily as winter visitors and passage migrants, especially in open and hilly landscapes. They are usually observed singly and can often be identified by their broad-winged silhouette and steady soaring flight.
