Bulbuls – Family Overview
Bulbuls are small to medium-sized passerine birds belonging to the family Pycnonotidae. They are known for their soft plumage, expressive crests in some species, and pleasant, varied vocalisations.
Bulbuls inhabit a wide range of habitats including forests, woodland edges, scrub, plantations, gardens, and urban green spaces. Many species adapt well to human-altered landscapes and are common in suburban areas.
These birds are primarily frugivorous and insectivorous, feeding on fruits, berries, nectar, and a variety of insects. They play an important role in seed dispersal and insect population control.
Bulbuls are generally active and social birds, often seen in pairs or small groups. They are known for their frequent calling and lively movements through foliage.
The family is widely distributed across Africa and Asia, with India hosting a rich diversity of resident bulbul species across different habitats. They are among the most familiar and conspicuous birds in the Indian subcontinent.
