Birds of Paradise – Family Overview

Birds-of-paradise are among the most spectacular and iconic birds of the avian world, renowned for their extraordinary plumage, elaborate courtship displays, and remarkable diversity of forms. Belonging to the family Paradisaeidae, these birds are primarily found in New Guinea and nearby islands, with a few species extending into eastern Australia.

Males of many species exhibit dramatic ornamental feathers, iridescent colours, and complex behavioural displays used to attract females. These displays often involve ritualised movements, specialised perches, and carefully prepared display courts within forest habitats. Females, typically more subdued in appearance, play a key role in mate selection.

Birds-of-paradise inhabit a range of forest environments, from lowland rainforests to montane cloud forests. Their diets vary by species and may include fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, making them important contributors to forest ecology, particularly through seed dispersal.
