Barbets – Group Overview

Barbets are stout, brightly coloured birds commonly associated with forests, woodland edges, and tree-rich urban areas. They are often detected by their loud, repetitive calls long before they are seen.

Barbets belong to the family Megalaimidae in Asia. They are primarily frugivorous, feeding on figs and other fruits, but also take insects and other small invertebrates. Their strong bills are well adapted for both feeding and excavating nest cavities.

Most barbet species are cavity nesters, using holes in trees for breeding. Their close association with fruiting trees makes them important seed dispersers and key components of forest ecosystems.

This section features photographs of barbets documented across forested and semi-urban habitats, highlighting variation in plumage, bill structure, and feeding behaviour among species.
